50 years after establishing Glenturret, the Drummonds made an agreement with Sir Patrick Murray, owner of the Ochtertyre Estate, that confirmed their right to extract water and dig peat for the purposes of distilling. The malted barley would have been dried over fires fuelled by peat imparting a smokiness to the new make spirit.
