Revolution Tannat (Uruguay) 13.5% 75cl

Tannat was introduced to Uruguay by Basque settlers in 1870, soon becoming the national grape. It has adapted perfectly to a challenging array of local conditions, producing dark, often powerful wines capable of extended ageing and complexity. Taming the tannins and producing soft, juicy, approachable wines such as this one is no easy task but in the right hands – Gabriel Pisano’s in this case – and with beautifully ripened fruit, Tannat doesn’t require a knife and fork to unveil its lovely dark secrets.

This wine is part of the modern Uruguayan wine revolution; delicious upon release but happy to sit quietly in a cupboard for five years. The grapes come from many small plots located within the Progreso village district. It pours an intense purple colour, and gives a complex and delicate aroma resembling mushrooms and red fruits. There is a great density in the mouth, plus extra long and robust flavours of jammy wild fruits, and ripe cranberries and blackberries. Expect light oak, polished texture and the meaty, smoky, plumy flavours characteristic of the Tannat grape variety. Vanilla spice from new barrels makes for a surprisingly complex red wine. The finish is long and generous. Serve around 18C.

The ultimate gastronomic pairing is traditional "Asado" (Uruguayan barbecued beef cooked on an open fire of wild woods. Pairs beautifully with oven roasted red meats or game, meat casseroles and stews made with dried pulses. Works equally well for pasta with strong sauces, cured hams, sharp hard cheeses.
